Every relationship goes through hard seasons. Whether you're stuck in the same argument, feeling like roommates instead of partners, or trying to rebuild trust after a painful rupture — couples therapy offers a structured space to work through what's broken and build something stronger.
At West Houston Counseling & Psychology, our therapists bring clinical expertise and genuine care to couples work. We help partners slow down, hear each other differently, and develop real skills they can use between sessions.
What Brings Couples to Therapy?
Couples come to WHCP at every stage — some early, wanting to strengthen communication before things deepen; others in crisis after years of disconnection, a breach of trust, or a life event that shifted everything. Wherever you are, you don't have to have it figured out before you call.
Common reasons couples seek therapy at WHCP:
Communication breakdowns or recurring conflict
Emotional or physical disconnection — feeling like roommates
Trust issues or recovering from infidelity
Major life transitions: new baby, relocation, job loss, empty nest, retirement
Navigating infertility, pregnancy loss, or perinatal stress as a couple
Disagreements around parenting, finances, or division of roles
Wanting a long-term relationship tune-up before small issues become big ones
Preparing for marriage or deepening an existing commitment
Our Approach to Couples Therapy
Our therapists use evidence-based frameworks that go beyond talk therapy — giving couples practical tools, a clearer understanding of their patterns, and a path forward that works for both partners.
Gottman Method Couples Therapy
Based on four decades of research on what makes relationships succeed or fail, the Gottman Method helps couples build friendship, manage conflict without escalation, and create deeper trust and commitment. Sessions focus on practical, research-backed tools couples can use in real life.
Family Systems Therapy
A systems lens helps partners understand how their individual histories, family-of-origin patterns, and relational dynamics are showing up in the relationship today — and how to interrupt cycles that aren't serving either of you.
Relational Life Therapy (RLT)
Developed by Terry Real, RLT is a direct and real-world approach to relationship repair. It helps couples break generational patterns, take genuine accountability, and build the kind of intimacy that lasts.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)
When individual trauma, anxiety, or unresolved emotional experiences are fueling conflict inside the relationship, ART can help a partner process and release that weight in just a few sessions — often dramatically shifting the dynamic between partners.
Our couples therapists draw on whichever combination of approaches best fits your situation. We don't use a one-size-fits-all model — we meet you where you are.

That depends on what you're working on and how quickly patterns shift. Some couples notice meaningful change in 8–12 sessions; others benefit from longer work. Your therapist will check in regularly about your goals and progress.
